Want It Wednesday: CANON PowerShot SX720

This week’s Want It Wednesday is about the sleek CANON PowerShot SX720 HS Superzoom Compact Camera (what a mouthful right?) and this was a post I was kind of excited to write about, because I may well be investing in one of these pretty soon!

One of the many things that was talked about, actually, more like stressed the most in my course (it was journalism by the way) was that good, original content and relevant photographs are absolutely key. They work extremely well together and not only can they liven up content, they can make your article just that little bit more engaging and we were told that this is something that should be on our minds 24/7 no matter what story we were researching or chasing for the day (or week).

Almost everyday we were asked questions like, “How are you going to illustrate that?” or “What pictures are you going to show us?” or “Is your photo relevant to the story?”, and so on. You get the picture. So I guess it’s not much of a surprise that this week’s Want It Wednesday is about a camera!

As someone who’s just starting out, I need all the help I can get to build up and get this blog exactly where I want it to be. I’d like to think that I’m slowly (but surely) building the foundations, content wise, to this blog but unfortunately, I don’t think I can say the same about the imagery part. I don’t think the little camera on my iPhone 7 is enough. I need a camera. And I need this camera. Now.

The beautiful thing about this piece of tech is that it’s so compact; I can carry it everywhere and it’ll sure as hell fit in my handbag with ease. My dad carries a backpack around with him whenever we go away and that bag houses a CANON DSLR (I forget the exact make of it) and a long ass lens that he’s spent a few months looking for. To be honest, I don’t want to have to carry an extra bag just for a camera, so I’m sold on this baby right away.

With 20.3 megapixels and 40x optical zoom, it’ll do me just fine for what I intend to use it for – blogging and taking lovely photos of everything every time I go on holiday! I’ve read reviews (as you do) about this camera and a lot are raving about the image quality and how amazing the zoom is and there are of course negative reviews about the flash, about the camera not having a tilt screen or touch screen and the LCD screen being quite hard to see when it’s bright but that’s to be expected right? Nothing’s perfect after all.

I’m by no means loaded with spare cash, so I don’t want to buy a camera that costs the earth, but I understand that if you want something good, you have to pay a little extra. Right now, this camera’s retail price is £259 from Curry’s, which I don’t think is particularly expensive for a CANON. It’s definitely at the lower price point compared to other CANON cameras, but for what I want to use it for, it’s just fine with me. I may have to take up Curry’s “pay within 6 months, interest free” option just to get my hands on this camera sooner…

Are you a blogger? What camera do you use for your blog’s images? Do you have any recommendations? I’d love to hear from you!
